A Fair Road Tax

Problem: Bicyclists are thieves who use the road but do not pay road tax. EV owners also pay reduced fuel tax which starves roads of funding.

Solution: Charge all road users based on the amount of road they use up calculated based on the industry standard definition of road wear.

The fourth power rule used by civil engineers states that the damage caused to a road by a vehicle is proportional to the fourth power of the axle load of that vehicle. This means that even small increases in the weight of a vehicle can result in significantly greater road damage.

To calculate the tax for each vehicle based on the bike tax:

  1. Determine the axle load ratio: axleLoadRatio = (Weight of vehicle) / (Weight of bicycle)
  2. Apply the fourth power rule: taxRatio = (axleLoadRatio)^4
  3. Calculate the vehicle tax: vehicleTax = bikeTax * taxRatio
